Let Your Light Shine: Living as Kingdom Influencers
In a world obsessed with social media influence and personal branding, Jesus offers a radically different perspective on what it means to have true influence. Rather than drawing attention to ourselves, we’re called to be signposts pointing others toward God.
What Does It Mean to Be Light in the World?
Jesus declares in Matthew 5:14-16: “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” This isn’t about manufacturing light or putting on a performance. We don’t have to create something that isn’t there. Instead, we simply allow the light of Jesus – who is the true light of the world – to shine through us. We’re called to be reflectors of His image, living out our original design as image-bearers of God.
How Do Good Deeds Connect to Being Light?
The connection between being light and doing good deeds is crucial to understand. Good deeds aren’t the goal – they’re the overflow of a transformed life. As the apostle James wrote: “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead” (James 2:17). Acts of kindness, generosity, mercy, integrity, and humility aren’t strategies we employ to look good. They’re natural expressions of a heart being transformed by the Holy Spirit. Just as a healthy tree bears fruit because of its nature and environment, a life rooted in Jesus will naturally produce visible fruit that others notice.
Why Should Our Lives Point to God, Not Ourselves?
The goal of our good deeds is never “look at me” but always “look at Him.” Jesus is clear that these good deeds should glorify our Father in heaven. Our lives become signposts pointing beyond ourselves to God. This understanding protects us from two dangerous extremes: trying to draw attention to ourselves or hiding out completely so we’re not active at all. Instead, we’re called to live visible lives that direct attention to God. As Peter encourages: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they may accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” (1 Peter 2:12).
How Can Every Moment Be an Opportunity for Kingdom Influence?
Paul reminds us in Colossians 3:17: “Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” And in 1 Corinthians 10:31: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” Every moment in our lives matters – not just the big, dramatic ones, but the small, ordinary, everyday interactions. The conversations we have, the decisions we make, the responses we give – all of these can be opportunities for Kingdom influence. Consider something as simple as being stuck in traffic or standing in line at the grocery store. How we respond in these moments reveals what’s really going on in our hearts. Are we being light? Are we making a difference? Are we being salt in the world around us?
What Does It Mean to Live From the Inside Out?
This life Jesus calls us to was never meant to be lived from the outside in through rule-following and external performance. It was always intended to be lived from the inside out through yielding to the Holy Spirit and allowing change to happen within us. It’s not about doing more – it’s about becoming different as we yield to Him. This is an inside-out transformation that He accomplishes in us as we stay close to Him and cooperate with His work in our lives.
How Do We Stay Rooted in This Kind of Life?
The key is staying close to Jesus and keeping Him at the center of our story. We have a tendency to get caught up in the busyness of life and put ourselves at the center, making everything about us and how it impacts us. When we do this, we’ve removed Him from the center and we’re not experiencing the life He’s called us to. We need to make sure daily that He’s the center of the story and our lives are describing Him. We’re meant to be adjectives pointing people toward the noun of the story – Jesus Himself.
Why Does Your Life Matter More Than You Realize?
Wherever God has placed you, you’re already positioned for influence. Your life matters more than you realize. Just by being there, God’s presence is with you, and you’re making a difference because of that. Sometimes we don’t see the impact of simple obedience and small “yeses” to God. But these everyday moments of faithfulness can have far-reaching effects that we may never fully understand this side of heaven.
Life Application
This week, focus on doing the next right thing rather than trying to do everything. Stay close to Jesus and allow Him to shine through you in the ordinary moments of your life. Remember that you don’t have to manufacture light – you simply need to reflect His light that’s already in you.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Am I living as a signpost pointing others to God, or am I trying to draw attention to myself?
- How can I allow God’s light to shine through me in my everyday interactions this week?
- What small “yes” is God asking of me that I might be hesitating to give?
- Am I keeping Jesus at the center of my story, or have I made myself the main character?
Your life has Kingdom influence potential in every moment. Trust that God is working through you, even in ways you can’t see, as you simply stay close to Him and let His light shine through your transformed life.
