From Death to Life: Understanding Your Story in Christ
Have you ever wondered if there’s more to your faith than just waiting for heaven? What if the story of Jesus—His death and resurrection—is actually your story too? This profound truth changes everything about how we understand our present reality as believers.
What Does It Mean That Jesus Brings Light Into Darkness?
John’s Gospel opens with a powerful declaration: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” This takes us right back to Genesis, to God’s original plan for creation—a place where He would dwell with us as a supernatural family, representing Him throughout the earth. But something went wrong. The fall introduced the enemy’s rule through the power of death and darkness. Until Jesus arrived on the scene. Jesus doesn’t just bring a nice message or good moral teachings. He brings something revolutionary: the power of life itself. This isn’t just about what happens after we die—it’s about a life that begins in eternity with Jesus and breaks into our world now.
How Does Jesus Defeat Death?
Here’s where the story gets fascinating. Jesus defeats the power of sin with the power of death—He takes all sin upon Himself and dies with it. Then He defeats the power of death with the power of life through His resurrection. But Jesus doesn’t just go through this journey alone. He invites all who believe in Him to take that journey with Him and share in His victory. This isn’t metaphorical—it’s a spiritual reality that changes everything.
The Enemy’s Strategy vs. God’s Victory
The enemy seeks to rule through the power of death, keeping us enslaved in darkness. But Jesus has come with the power of life, strong enough to overthrow death and restore us to God’s original design. As Colossians 1:13 tells us: “He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.” When you say yes to Jesus, you’re literally rescued from the enemy’s camp and brought into God’s kingdom.
What Does It Mean That Jesus’ Story Is Your Story?
This is where many believers miss something crucial. We often think of Jesus’ death and resurrection as His story that benefits us somehow. But Scripture reveals something more profound—His story becomes our story. Consider these powerful verses:
“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20). This isn’t just poetic language—it describes a spiritual reality.
“For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). If you’re a believer, you actually died—at the cross with Jesus.
“If we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his” (Romans 6:5).
You’ve Already Stepped Into Eternity
Here’s the mind-blowing truth: those who follow Jesus have stepped into eternity ahead of time. We’ve already been carried through from death into life. Death was the cornerstone of the enemy’s plan, but when we put our faith in Jesus, that grip on us is broken.
Ephesians 2:4-6 makes this clear: “Because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions… And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.”
Notice the past tense—this has already happened. We’re already seated with Christ in heavenly realms.
How Should This Change How We Live?
If we’ve truly been set free from death’s grip and brought into the power of life, our daily existence should reflect this reality. We’re no longer living under the shadow of death’s rule—we’re walking in the light. This doesn’t mean we won’t face challenges on this broken planet. But something is fundamentally different. We’re new creation people, already planted securely on the far side of the age to come.
Living as People of Eternity Now
Instead of living under the shadow of death, we now live under the fear of the Lord—not being afraid of God, but having the wisdom that comes from submitting to Him and His ways rather than going our own direction. We have access to the heaven-and-earth connection. This is a much bigger, more interesting life than we often imagine because we’re part of a story that’s already begun, not just waiting for something to happen someday.
What About Angels and Our Future Bodies?
Since we’re talking about eternal realities, let’s clear up some common misconceptions. When believers die, we don’t become angels—angels are angels, and we’re people with a different and better destiny than angels. Our hope isn’t floating on clouds with harps. Our biblical hope is that the heavenly city comes down to a renewed and restored planet, and we receive new, restored bodies that are incorruptible—no more pain or sorrow.
How Do We Enter This Reality?
This transformation happens through faith alone. Romans 10:9-10 explains: “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Through faith, the resurrection of Jesus becomes our resurrection as well. We’re carried through from death into life, and the enemy’s grip on us is broken.
Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to live like someone who has already stepped into eternity. When fear, temptation, or despair tries to pull you back into the shadows, remember: that’s not your story anymore. Jesus’ story of death and resurrection is your story too. Ask yourself these questions:
Are you living as a person of eternity right now, or are you just waiting for someday?
Do your relationships reflect the understanding that you’re part of a bigger story?
Does your attitude, especially when facing hardships, reflect that you’re already a person of eternity?
How can you let His life shine through you so others still trapped in darkness can find their way to Jesus?
Remember, you have access to the heaven-and-earth connection. Press in, follow Jesus, and live out the next right thing, knowing that He can take even simple acts of obedience and use them in ways you can’t imagine. His story is your story—step fully into it.
