Living in the Overflow of God’s Love: Finding Purpose in Christ

When we truly understand how much Jesus loves us, something amazing happens – it starts to spill out into everything around us. God’s love isn’t meant to stay contained within us; it’s designed to overflow into the world around us. God’s love is so powerful and so big that it naturally overflows from heaven into our lives. We’re invited to live from that overflow, letting His love fill us up and pour out into the world. This changes everything – how we live, how we think, and how we treat people. The reality is simple: we either live from a deep, loving relationship with God that affects everything we do, or we try to live on our own strength. When we choose the latter, we end up running on empty, tired, dry, and with nothing to give to those around us.

How Do We Live Out of the Overflow of Our Relationship with God?

In 1 John 4:7-10, we find guidance on how to live in the overflow of God’s love:
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed His love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”

Living in the overflow of God’s love requires three key actions:

  1. Love One Another

The Bible instructs us to “love one another, for love comes from God” (1 John 4:7). This isn’t just any kind of love – it’s sacrificial love, the kind that Jesus demonstrated when He came to earth as the perfect sacrifice for us. In the New Testament, there are over 51 “one another” verses that guide us in practical ways to express love:

Forgive one another
Encourage one another
Serve one another
Honor one another
Be devoted to one another

These aren’t just nice suggestions; they’re essential practices for living in God’s overflow.

  1. Connect with God

“Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:7-8). If we truly love others, it shows that we’ve been born of God and know Him. But if we’re not walking in love, something’s off in our connection with God, because God is love – it’s not just something He does; it’s who He is.
Loving people isn’t about trying harder; it’s about staying connected to the One who is love. The Greek word for “born” in this passage speaks of a close personal relationship like that of a parent and child. When we’re born of God, we don’t just have a label – we have a deep, ongoing connection with our Father. This connection empowers us to love the way He loves. Without it, we’re trying to run on empty, like using an electronic device that isn’t plugged in. When we’re connected to God:

We’re aligned with His heart
We see people the way He sees them
We love beyond our natural capacity
He uses us in ways we could never accomplish on our own

We stay connected through reading His Word, praying, and spending daily time with Him. God’s love tank never runs dry – the more we draw from it, the more we’re able to love others well.

  1. Contemplate Continually the Depths of God’s Love

“This is how God showed His love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through Him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins” (1 John 4:9-10). God showed His love in a visible way by sending His Son. The depths of God’s love are revealed in Jesus – His life, ministry, death, and resurrection. Think about what it means that our Lord and Savior died for you, washing away all your wrongdoings.

Understanding the Weight of Sin and the Power of God’s Love

Romans 6:23 tells us, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. “Sin has devastating effects. Throughout Scripture, we see a pattern:

Adam was formed from dust, given life, but after sinning was told he would return to dust
God created the world out of chaos, but sin led to the flood that returned it to watery chaos
God built Israel from Abraham through David, but sin led to exile in Babylon

Sin rewinds the story. It takes good and brings it down. It returns us to dust, to chaos, to exile. The wages of sin is death. But here’s the hope: “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus breaks the cycle and brings new life that sin can’t undo.
When Jesus came, He didn’t sin. His kingdom goes on forever because He went to the cross for us. He paid for our sin. We deserve death because we’ve chosen to do things our way, but He gives us the gift of eternal life. The Old Testament shows us people who mess up repeatedly, highlighting our desperate need for Jesus. God opens a path through Jesus – not just for someday, but for a new life today. This life in Him is full, rich, and abundant.

Life Application

This week, make it your goal to live from the overflow, not from pressure, stress, or emptiness. Here’s how:

Take time each day (aim for at least 10 minutes) to be with God. Read Scripture, pray, or simply sit in quiet reflection on His love for you. Let this time fill your heart so you don’t have to live on empty.

Look for someone every day to show intentional love to. This might be:

Offering a word of encouragement
Avoiding sarcasm or holding back a witty one-liner
Responding with patience instead of sharpness
Sending a text to someone you haven’t checked on in a while
Performing a simple act of service

You don’t have to manufacture this love on your own. Just rest in God’s love for you and let it flow through you. That’s how the overflow works.

Questions to Consider:

Where in my life am I trying to love others from my own strength rather than from God’s overflow?
How consistent is my connection with God? What practical steps can I take to deepen it?
Who is someone specific I can show God’s love to this week, and how will I do it?
When I feel empty or stressed, how can I remind myself to return to the source of love?

Remember, God’s love for you is boundless. As you receive it and let it fill you, it will naturally overflow to those around you, bringing life and hope wherever you go.
