Understanding God’s Power and Love in Difficult Times
When life gets tough and circumstances don’t go as planned, it’s easy to become discouraged. This is exactly what happened to the believers in Ephesus when they heard that Paul had been imprisoned. They couldn’t understand why someone serving God would face such hardship. This struggle is timeless – we often wonder why difficult things happen when we’re trying to follow God. The answer lies in understanding both God’s power and His love in a deeper way.
The Ephesians’ Struggle with Discouragement
Paul had spent two years in Ephesus, preaching daily in the lecture hall of Tyrannus. His message about the one true God resonated with many people who had previously worshipped various “little g” gods. These new believers even publicly burned their sorcery scrolls worth 50,000 drachmas as they turned from their old ways. However, these Ephesian believers still carried an old way of thinking: if you make God happy, He should do what you want. So when they heard Paul was in prison, they were confused and discouraged. Wasn’t Paul doing what God wanted? Why would God allow this to happen?
Don’t Be Discouraged by Circumstances
Paul’s response to their discouragement was direct: “I ask you, therefore, not to be discouraged because of my suffering for you, which are for your glory.” This message applies to us today. When we face difficult situations, we often think, “God, if you love me and you’re really all-powerful, why is this happening?” But Paul wants us to understand that God is bigger than our circumstances.
How Does God’s Power Work in Our Lives?
In Ephesians 3:14-19, Paul prays that God would strengthen believers with power (dunamis – the Greek word from which we get “dynamite”) through His Spirit in their inner being. But what is this power for? Interestingly, Paul doesn’t pray for God’s power to remove difficulties or change circumstances. Instead, he prays that God’s power would help believers grasp something far more important – the love of Christ. “I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power together with all the Lord’s holy people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.” God’s power works differently than we might expect. Rather than simply removing obstacles, His power works within us to help us understand how deeply we are loved – a truth that changes everything about how we face difficulties.
Why Does God Allow Difficult Circumstances?
God often uses challenging situations to stretch us, grow us, and change us. But we can only embrace this growth when we rest in the knowledge that He loves us and is for us.
Consider the story of Joseph in Genesis. Despite doing the right things, Joseph faced betrayal from his brothers, false accusations, and imprisonment. Yet through all these difficulties, God was working toward a greater purpose. As Joseph later told his brothers, “You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.”
How Can We Trust God When Life Is Hard?
Paul reminds us that God “is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” This means that even when we can’t see how our current circumstances could possibly work out for good, God is able to do things beyond our imagination. The key is settling into the reality of God’s love. Not so we can use His power to remove every difficulty, but so that in the midst of a fallen world, we can fully rest in His love in a way that transforms how we experience life’s challenges.
Life Application
This week, take Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3:14-19 and pray it over your life daily. Ask God specifically to strengthen your inner being with His power so that you might grasp how wide, long, high, and deep Christ’s love is for you. When resistance comes and you feel pushback, don’t default to discouragement. Instead, go deeper in prayer. Let difficulties drive you closer to the Lord and let His Spirit remind you of who you are and whose you are.
Ask yourself:
When I face difficulties, do I immediately question God’s love or power?
How might my perspective change if I truly grasped the depth of God’s love for me?
What situation in my life right now needs to be viewed through the lens of God’s immeasurable love rather than my limited understanding?
Remember, God wants His power specifically to help you rest in His love for you. Let that amazing truth settle on you and change you forever.
