How to Stay Salty: Maintaining Your Christian Influence in a Changing World

Jesus called His followers “the salt of the earth” – not as something to strive for, but as an identity we already possess. This isn’t about trying harder to be impressive; it’s about recognizing that because of who Christ is in us, we carry His influence wherever we go. But there’s an important caveat Jesus gives us: salt can lose its saltiness.

Can Salt Really Lose Its Saltiness?

In Jesus’ time, salt was extremely valuable and often mixed with other minerals to stretch it further or increase profits. Over time, these additives would dilute the salt, causing it to lose its effectiveness. This wasn’t just a theoretical concern – it was a real problem that people understood. Similarly, we can look like followers of Jesus and even sound like followers of Jesus, but slowly lose the distinctiveness of a life shaped by Him. This isn’t about losing salvation – it’s about losing effectiveness and influence, becoming indistinguishable from the world around us.

How Do We Lose Our Saltiness?

The writer of Hebrews gives us insight: “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard so that we do not drift away” – Hebrews 2:1. The key word here is “drift” – it happens slowly and gradually over time. We live in a time when everything has gotten loud and is constantly coming at us. While Jesus never stops reaching out to us, we have to listen for His voice among all the other voices competing for our attention. When we stop paying careful attention, we begin to absorb the values of culture more than we should. Without realizing it, we start thinking like the culture, reacting like the culture, and prioritizing what the world prioritizes.

Why Does Staying Salty Matter?

Peter explains the importance: “Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they may accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us” – 1 Peter 2:12.

We’re called to live in the world in a way that impacts and influences others to turn their lives toward God through Christ. This usually happens through how we live, not just what we say. Even when people may not like what we stand for, they should be drawn to who Christ is through our demonstration of love, kindness, and encouragement.

Paul challenges us further: “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation” – Philippians 2:14-15.

How Do We Stay Connected to Our Source?

Jesus gives us the answer: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” – John 15:4-5.

This isn’t condemnation – it’s invitation. Jesus isn’t saying “try harder”; He’s saying “hang out with me.” The answer to staying salty is staying connected to our source.

Make Time for Him Daily

Relationships take time, and our relationship with God is the most significant one we have. If we don’t schedule time for what matters, something else will fill that space. We must make time for Him every single day.

Spend Time in His Word

The Bible is unlike any other book. It’s designed with layers that invite us to draw deeper every day of our lives. You’re never done with it – there’s always more to discover. Even reading the same passages multiple times reveals new insights as the Holy Spirit illuminates different aspects.

Stay Open to the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit leads, guides, directs, and encourages, but He doesn’t overpower us. He works in partnership with us. We need to yield to Him, listen for His voice, and remain open to what He wants to do in and through us.

Walk with Him Daily

Paul reminds us: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him” – Colossians 2:6. The same simple surrender that began our relationship with Christ should continue daily. It’s not about perfection; it’s about relationship.

The Key to Kingdom Influence

Kingdom influence isn’t about trying to stand out or be weird. It’s about staying rooted in Christ and pressing into Him. As we do this, our lives become distinct because of who He is, not because of our own efforts. Salt only works when it’s different from what it touches. If it becomes the same as everything else, it loses its purpose. Our influence in the world depends on our distinctiveness in Christ – living with humility, mercy, integrity, and peace.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to pay attention to what’s shaping you. What voices are forming your thinking and opinions? What patterns are developing in your life? Look honestly for areas where you might be drifting – not with guilt, but with honesty. Are there areas where you’ve begun to blend in rather than reflect who Jesus is? Most importantly, keep turning to Jesus day after day. Not perfectly, but intentionally. Stay close to Him, look to Him, follow after Him, and hang out with Him. As you do this, you’ll naturally maintain your saltiness and make a difference in the world around you.

Questions for reflection:

  • What voices or influences am I allowing to shape my thinking more than God’s Word?
  • In what areas of my life have I begun to blend in with the culture rather than stand out for Christ?
  • How can I be more intentional about spending daily time with Jesus this week?
  • What would it look like for me to “remain in the vine” more consistently in my daily routine?
