Living as Small Working Models of New Creation: The Fruit of the Spirit
In a world that often feels chaotic and broken, we’re called to live differently. Not as people waiting for some distant heaven, but as individuals who embody the life of God’s kingdom right here, right now. The fruit of the Spirit isn’t just a nice list of character traits—it’s the currency of God’s kingdom and evidence of our transformation into genuinely human beings.
What Does It Mean to Be Genuinely Human?
When we look at Galatians 5:19-21, we see what Paul calls the “acts of the flesh”—sexual immorality, hatred, jealousy, selfish ambition, and more. These behaviors represent sub-human living, ways that fall short of how we were created to exist. Paul warns that “those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.” This isn’t just about missing out on heaven—it’s about missing out on the rule and reign of God in our lives right now. When we engage in these destructive patterns, we’re not living as we were designed to live.
How Do We Live by the Spirit?
The problem began in Genesis when Adam and Eve chose not to trust God but to trust their own thinking. This resulted in spiritual death—a disconnect from God’s life that was passed on to all of us. As Paul reminds us in Ephesians 2, we were all “dead in our transgressions and sins.”
Made Alive in Christ
But God, in His great mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in our transgressions. This transformation happens by grace through faith—it’s not something we earn through rule-following or good behavior. Paul encourages us to “walk by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.” The flesh and Spirit are in constant conflict, but when we’re led by the Spirit, we’re not under the law anymore.
Freedom Isn’t License
This freedom doesn’t mean we can do whatever we want. True freedom comes when we follow God and serve others in love. When we try to define right and wrong for ourselves, we end up in a mess. But when we yield to the Spirit, we experience the full life of Christ.
What Are the Fruits of the Spirit?
The fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—represents the currency of God’s kingdom. These are the visible qualities that flow from a genuine Christian life when the Holy Spirit is in control.
Evidence of Transformation
These fruits are the outward evidence of an inward transformation. They’re what happens when we’re set free from our old, distorted, sin-driven nature and released into a life where the Spirit has full freedom to work in us. When we’re surrendered to the Lord, we’re like healthy trees producing good fruit. But when we allow our sinful nature to take charge, the fruit disappears or spoils.
How Do We Become Small Working Models of New Creation?
Life in the Spirit is about learning to yield and surrender. When we live surrendered to Him, the fruit can grow naturally. When our old nature is active, everything revolves around us—we lose patience, become unkind, and lack compassion. But when we’re yielded to the Spirit, patience, kindness, and love flow freely and naturally. This life in Christ enables us to love others, live with joy, walk in peace, and experience all the blessings that come from the fruit of the Spirit.
Participating in God’s Kingdom Work
We’re free to live for something greater than ourselves. We’re welcomed to join in the kingdom of God and have a part to play. We’re encouraged to serve others in love and participate in God’s transforming work in the world.
What Does This Look Like in Daily Life?
If the kingdom is already breaking in and we’re living as small working models of new creation, then every day becomes an opportunity to reflect the life of the Spirit. The world should catch a glimpse of what restored creation looks like when they observe our lives.
Transformation in Every Area
Our relationships, words, attitudes, and reactions can all become places where the Spirit’s fruit grows. Love replaces indifference. Joy pushes out despair. Peace quiets the chaos of the world. Patience softens frustrations. Kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control begin to flow out of us like streams of living water. This transformation affects our marriages, family relationships, and workplace interactions. When we live with the fruits of the Spirit, we become people who light up a room when we enter it—just like Jesus did.
Life Application
We’re not waiting for heaven to begin someday—heaven’s life has already begun in us. The Spirit is forming us into people who reflect the beauty of Jesus right now in a world that desperately needs to see what true life looks like.
This week, take inventory of your spiritual life. Ask yourself: Where do I see His fruit growing in me? Give yourself credit for the positive changes you’re experiencing. Then honestly assess: Where am I still holding on to my old nature?
Finally, yield again to the Holy Spirit. Let Him shape and fill you as He assembles you into a small working model of new creation. When the people of God live by the Spirit, the world around us gets a glimpse of the kingdom—they see what changed lives look like and what it means to be fully human the way life was always meant to be.
Questions for Reflection:
Which fruit of the Spirit do I see growing most in my life right now?
In what areas am I still trying to control things instead of yielding to the Spirit?
How can my relationships, words, and attitudes become better reflections of God’s kingdom this week?
What would change in my daily interactions if I truly lived as a small working model of new creation?
